Hints and Tips

Baby puppies thrive on routine. Offer meals at the same time each day and take them out at regular times for toilet trips and play periods. Make a note of the times that your puppy sleeps and plays and try (as best you can) to plan their day around those times. Once they are house trained and more predictable in their habits they are better able to tolerate changes in their schedule.

Whilst your little puppy seems like they can play all day and night without tiring, don't overdo your puppies exercise regime. Easy does it for the first 6-9 months. Keep walks brief and don't let them engage in lots of jumping games. Whilst they are a tough and sturdy breed, their frame is still delicate and too much over zealous exercise in these critical growing months can cause injury to bone structure, ligaments and muscles. In addition, it is highly recommended that you keep your little puppy away from other dogs and outside environments until they are 12 weeks of age. Even though they are vaccinated, it takes up to this point for the vaccine to take full effect. Unfortunately, not all other dogs are protected against the basic dog diseases and it would be devastating to lose your little one due to something they picked up in this period.

It is a good idea to teach your Welshie to "drop" from an early age. They are very inquisitive and have a habit of picking things up and carrying them around. Empty toilet rolls from your waste bin and socks are firm favourites! This command is also useful if they happen to pick up an unknown food source or something sharp. Canines are pack animals and they live according to pack rules, Welshies are no exception. Authority should be established very early and a set of rules developed and adhered to by all. Everyone in the family should take part in the training so that the dog will respect and obey all members of his/her "pack".
