Character

A Welsh Terrier looks very similar to an Airedale Terrier but is smaller in stature - 39 cm (15 inches) being the tallest they should grow, with their weight fully grown being around 9 kg (20 pounds). The Welsh were bred for power and endurance and are a very happy and energetic dog that will play for as long as you want to, that said they will also be happy laying next to you on the couch just having some quiet time.

They are loving and loyal and very intelligent, they soon work out what you want of them but will try to test you so they get their own way so vigilence is needed in early training. They love the water and swimming, exploring new places and having a keen sense of smell they will track scents and love to chase things so unless you have a very well trained dog it is advisable to only let them off the lead in enclosed areas.

Compatibility with slighly older children is excellent. They will obey them and are ready for almost any game they want to play, even dress ups! However, a Welsh puppy is not a suitable pet to consider for families with babies or children under the age of 5. The puppy will tend to treat very young children as littermates and their playing can be too rough and tumble for the very young child.

They do not lose hair but the coat will require stripping out around 3 times a year - maybe more depending on the condition of the coat - and general grooming with a brush and comb a number of times each week. If the dog is to be shown it will require a lot more attention and grooming to the coat.

Overall the Welsh Terrier is a friendly and energetic breed that loves your company and being a part of your life.
